[/av_heading] [/av_section][av_three_fourth first] [av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=” custom_class=”] The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) is an intergovernmental organization created in 2008 bringing together members of MERCOSUR and the Andean Community of Nations. Its objective is to develop greater regional economic and political integration. Until recently, it comprised twelve Member States: Argentina; Bolivia; Brazil; Chile; Colombia; Ecuador; Guyana; Paraguay; Peru; Suriname; Uruguay; and Venezuela.

Last month, the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Paraguay decided to temporarily leave UNASUR for a period of one year over disputes regarding who should lead the group. Currently, the post of Secretary General of UNASUR has been vacant since January 2017. The inability to elect a Secretary General is further complicated by the requirement that decisions be made by consensus, especially when one Member State vetoes a candidate supported by the majority.

Only time will tell whether the Member States can come to an agreement with each other to turn UNASUR into a more effective organization. If not, what is currently temporary could become permanent.
